Westampton Township Public Schools…Committed to our Future

Good Afternoon Westampton School Community:

This is a special update to inform you about a proposal made to our Board of Education by our Township Committee to jointly purchase Friends Academy at Westampton.  Here are the steps our Board of Education has taken:

·  Week of June 6, 2016:   Our Westampton Township Manager contacted our Board Secretary to discuss a proposal made to jointly purchase Friends Academy

·  June 15, 2016:   Our Board Secretary  invited our New Jersey Department of Education School Development Authority Representative,  and Burlington County School Business Administrator, to join her, our Mayor and Township Administrator on a tour of Friends Academy

·  June 27, 2016: A report of the tour was disseminated to the Board of Education, who expressed a full understanding of our lack of funding for the purchase and the student enrollment as projected by Woodmont Properties

·  June 28, 2016:  Our Superintendent and Board Secretary communicated the above information to the Township Manager

·  July 14, 2016:  Members of our Board of Education, in groups of three, toured Friends Academy

·  July 18, 2016:  Our Board of Education again reviewed the purchase price, costs of staffing and operation, and potential uses for the Friends Academy property

·  July 25, 2016:  Last evening, upon the request of the Township Committee, our Board met with them to discuss the joint purchase of the Friends Academy property

Our Board of Education is committed to our future. The mission of our schools is to educate every child in a fiscally responsible manner by staying within the mandated 2% budgetary cap.  Our Board appreciates the collaboration with our Township, and agrees that Friends Academy is a beautiful campus. However, Friends Academy neither meets our current, nor speculated needs. Westampton Township Public Schools cannot afford the base price.  Beyond the base price, the facility would have to be changed and upgraded to meet our needs, further compounding the cost. In the best interest of taxpayers, we must be financially prudent and continue to provide excellent educational programming for our children within our current school facilities. Great schools make great communities!
